Editor's Verdict: From the people behind the Guardian newspaper and several of the UK's leading independant film and cinema companies comes one of the most popular DVD rental "communities" in Europe. So the idea is that Sofa Cinema is all about film. And indeed, its free 30 day trial is probably the longest you'll find and the packages it offers are comparable to, and in the case of its heavy use £14.99 a monty for unlimited DVDs, slightly better than, the value offered by our number onechoice. There's no pay-as-you-go option, but this isn't a major problem for most users. The service works much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. You create a list of DVDs you want and however many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are sent to you by post. When you're done watching them, you just pop them in the pre-paid return envelope. As soon as they receive your returned DVDs they'll mail you your next batch of DVDs from your list. The site itself is nicely spartan in its layout but enlivened by sparing use of the trademark light blue and orange theme, echoing the look of the main Guardian website. The layout is similarly very clear, making it simple and easy to sign up right away and start receiving films (they promise) within 48 hours. The extra features are there too, but accessible through links and menus rather than crammed in up front, as with some of the busy-looking rental websites. These extras include plenty of reviews and lists to help you compile your own selection and links to the film news and articles available on the Guardian media websites. The Sofa Cinema site also offers an innovative download service for a range 2,000 films, TV episodes and shorts to download and watch on your computer almost instantly, though this is generally more expensive than the postal option (you pay more to get what you want when you want it) ig is also comparable to the value offered by the handful of other download services that have recently emerged on DVD rental websites.
