Editor's Verdict: Don't be put off by the large purple writing and masses of black on the front page of this website. Instead click deeper into the site and you'll find that the reviews and top 100 lists of DVDs which help you choose are just as extensive as you might expect from a major cinema chain, and very clearly and accessibly laid out in neat, OCD-friendly, symmetrical rows. No messy splash banners and distracting flashy things here. Having said that, its possible to be slightly baffled by the sheer array of packages you can choose from. These are presented in a much smaller font and, frankly, could be made to look a bit more interesting and engaging. Plus the wording and layout don't really make it very clear how many discs a month the "capped" services allow you to rent. The rates themselves are highly competitive, however - no better and no worse than the market leaders -and their heavy-use packages (e.g. unlimited DVDs, 4 discs at a time, for £19.99 per month) cater for the cineholic end of the market better than most other leading services. The thirty day free trial is also as good as any you will currently find in our Top 10 choices. However, be warned: as this is one of several leading DVD rental operations "powered" by LOVEFilm, if you've already taken advantage of a free trial offered by one of these other companies you won't be eligible for this one as well. The service works much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. You create a list of DVDs you want and however many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are sent to you by post. When you're done watching them, you just pop them in the pre-paid return envelope. As soon as they receive your returned DVDs they'll mail you your next batch of DVDs from your list. By all accounts, Odeon Direct does just what it says on the (virtual) tin: it offers a competitive DVD rental service that's relatively easy to use. It differs from the service offered by our number one choice, LOVEFilm only in offering slightly fewer titles and a slightly less comprehensive and engaging website. That, and all the purple writing.
